Why Choose Fredericksburg and Gillespie County?

Visitors considering a move to the Hill Country of Texas often enter my real estate office on Main Street in downtown Fredericksburg and ask me what I consider the advantages that this area has relative to other areas in Central Texas. This is an important question and one I am always eager to address. While getting acquainted with the Hill Country, newcomers often notice the moderately higher price between living in Gillespie County and other counties in the Texas Hill Country. However, as is most common with any valuation scenario, one usually gets what one pays for and in regards to Fredericksburg, one gets a lot.

Fredericksburg Texas has many advantages that may not meet the eye of the occasional or first time visitor. One important consideration for people contemplating Fredericksburg as a place to retire is health care. Our Hill Country Memorial Hospital is certainly one of the many reasons to further investigate living in Gillespie County. With around 80 ‘on staff’ or ’courtesy’ physicians, it offers superb medical care. There is such a large choice of doctors and specialists in Fredericksburg that it often seems that one out of ten people you meet while out and about the town is a physician or part of their medical staff.

Another important characteristic in which Fredericksburg, Texas compares favorably with other rural communities is the level of cultural activities available. The Fredericksburg Theater Company offers superb productions of such classics as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Amadeus, and West Side Story. Even the most experienced theater aficionado will be stunned by the quality product of this community theater. Additionally, there are so many world class restaurants that it is difficult to name them all. My personal favorite for lunch is Rather Sweet. This downtown bakery offers the best in light lunches and baked goods. For an incredibly unique dinner experience, you can try the Hill Top Café on North Highway 87. Owner Johnny Nicholas usually will entertain diners with live blues in an old converted gas station while you dine on excellent Cajun/Texas fare. There are not many other places in the Texas Hill Country where you can work your ranch during the day, go out for a world class meal that evening and end with a night at the theater.
