Be There or be Square; the Fredericksburg Texas Marktplatz

May 05, 2009

The Courthouse Square of Gillespie County located in Fredericksburg has been a very interesting place since it first came to be when the city was founded in 1846.  Originally a heavily treed part of the Texas Hill Country, the town built the Vereins Kirche, or community church, in the center of Main Street in 1947.  The building was octagonal in shape and was used for many purposes such as a community church, school, meeting place and a location to hide from possible Indian attacks.  Since then the Square has seen many changes including a county jail built in 1852 and school classes conducted in the Vereins Kirche. Classes were moved to a public schoolhouse in 1856.

The Vereins Kirche was later demolished in 1897 and rebuilt nearby to house the volunteer fire department.  Later on it was transformed again and continues to be a pioneer museum.  Considered the founding father, Baron Ottfried Hans Freiherr Von Meusebach (or John Meusebach as he chose to be called), is honored in effigy on the Square. Sitting with a group of Comanche Indians, he is shown consummating a treaty with peace pipe in hand.  This treaty allowed for a peaceful alliance resulting in one of the few Indian treaties never to have been broken.

Fredericksburg citizens are proud of their pioneer spirit and it is from the industry and bravery of their ancestors that Fredericksburg came to be. Our unique history is one of the many reasons that Fredericksburg is the pride of the Texas Hill Country.  Driving through the streets, it is easy to see that most Fredericksburg homes reflect that pride and are well cared for.  Many of the visitors and investors considering Fredericksburg Texas real estate do so because they know that Fredericksburg has a great future.

Spending time in the Texas Hill Country area is the best way to get to know our town.  Plan ahead to come to one of the many events and enjoy the combination of festivity and relaxation or just drop by and catch a breath at one of the many Bed & Breakfasts.
