Great Texas Bluebonnet Season Ahead!
Jan 13, 2010
The Texas Bluebonnet is suited to the Texas Hill Country. The heat of the summer is needed to germinate the seed and the long cold months of fall and winter allow the annual to develop an extensive root structure. This root structure helps the plant to endure the dry conditions of summer and produce seed.
This past spring, 2009, was not the best year to find wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country-side. A two year drought pushed the limits of even the toughest annuals including the bluebonnet. Sadly it was relatively scarce and always small.
But it may be time to celebrate, for the rains have come this year! Combined with the heat of last summer, rains this fall and the current temperatures that have been dipping down into the teens, I think we can expect Nature to put on a show this spring!
So make your plans. Take a drive through Gillespie County and be awestruck. Swing through Willow City, Harper, and Fredericksburg and get a fill of what spring is all about. And though you may have heard the myth, picking bluebonnets is not illegal (just be careful not to trespass or create a hazard on the side of the highway..) Please come and enjoy!
