Hill Country Community Needs Council

May 11, 2009

There is one particular organization which I think best embodies the quality of kindness you find in Fredericksburg Texas.  The Hill Country Community Need Council (HCCNC) was first organized by a small (4) group of concerned citizens in 1983 because though the community of Fredericksburg had various humanitarian services and agencies, there was no organizational structure to help guide the needy.  HCCNC began as people simply seeking to help others.  Since those first four people and a small pocket full of dollars, HCCNC has today become a full bodied organization that effectively organizes and directs those in need towards which ever appropriate agency or service can help.

The early services initially provided were principally maintaining current files for the resources available and a few services such as a Medical Transportation program.  This still ongoing program involves volunteers driving patients to either San Antonio or Austin when the individual does not have the resources to do so for themselves.  One of the other early programs was called Care Calls.  It involved young elementary students contacting an elderly or disabled person daily.  The intent was to both educate the young person about the needs and facts about aging as well as provide support and caring for a person in need of company.  Many of the children become quite dedicated to their call-e. One or two times a year the two groups unite for fun with an ice cream social.

Later in the mid 90’s, I spent 5 years serving on the HCCNC Board as Secretary.  During the time I was there, Fredericksburg was beginning to grow and change in a very positive way.  When we first moved to the Texas Hill Country in 1992, the community strongly reflected the nature of a small town cohesive in nature and somewhat isolated in culture.  The German language was frequently heard in shops and cafes (most recently it has become the object of great interest by linguists at the University of Texas at Austin as apparently the German dialect spoken in Fredericksburg is considered to be unique and waning.  Efforts are being made to record and preserve it). However, Fredericksburg Texas soon began to be discovered for the singular town it is and people began to move here.  Newcomers from differing backgrounds brought their unique experiences and skills and in combination with the strong foundation of sincerity already established, there was new momentum in the Needs Council.  Things began to really move then; funding increased, new programs were conceived and the commitment of the Board made it happen.

Other programs that came into being were such things as; Advocacy/Family Violence program, Case Management for counseling, Navigator for assisting clients through the maze of paperwork involved and others.  Please see their website for more information. The Hill Country Community Needs Council.

Our goal with this news blog is to share with you the wonders of living in a place that offers beautiful countryside, great city and health care services, friendly people and the opportunity to be involved and volunteer (or not) in so many different ways.  As REALTORs, selling Fredericksburg Texas real estate is our job but it is also very rewarding.  Many of the people I show property to have been visiting the Texas Hill Country for years and are finally ready to move or invest in Fredericksburg Texas real estate.  Searching for real estate is exciting and I would love to share in your search with you!
